Artist Biography
George Morland was a British painter renowned for his rustic genre scenes, landscapes, and depictions of rural life in late 18th-century England. Born in London into an artistic family, he showed prodigious talent from a young age and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy by the age of 15. His early work was heavily influenced by Dutch and Flemish masters, but he soon developed a distinctive style characterized by loose brushwork, naturalistic detail, and a warm, earthy palette. Morland's paintings often portrayed country cottages, farm animals, smugglers, and tavern interiors—scenes that appealed to both the urban middle class and the landed gentry. Despite his commercial success, he led a troubled personal life marked by extravagance and debt, which eventually led to his decline. He died in London at the age of 41.
