Artist Biography
Sir Frank William Brangwyn RA RWS RBA (1867-1956) was a painter, printmaker, illustrator, mural painter, and designer. Born in Bruges, Belgium, Brangwyn received his artistic training from his father, and later from Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo and in the workshops of William Morris. One of his paintings was accepted at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition at the age of 17, and his 1890 canvas Funeral At Sea won a medal of the third class at the 1891 Paris Salon. During the First World War he was an Official War Artist, mainly producing propaganda posters. Brangwyn exhibited widely, including at the Royal Society of British Artists - of which he was a former President - Royal Watercolour Society, Royal British Colonial Society of Artists, Grafton Galleries, and Walker Art Gallery. He was honoured in his lifetime with a major retrospective at the Royal Academy in 1924, which was opened by the Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. He was knighted for his services to art in 1941. In 2006, a catalogue raisonné was published and his work was exhibited at Leeds City Art Gallery to celebrate the occasion. The exhibition travelled to Arents House, Bruges, Belgium and to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. Brangwyn has work in most major UK museums and galleries including the Ben Uri, Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, the Dick Institute, Tate Gallery, Doncaster Art Gallery, Falmouth Art Gallery, Worthing Art Gallery, Beecroft Art Gallery, Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, National Railway Museum, Newport Art Gallery, Gwent, William Morris Museum, Scarborough Art Gallery, Sheffield Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
