He was educated at Edinburgh, in Friedrichsdorf, Germany, and the Royal Society of Arts Schools. He painted landscapes and rustic scenes as well as being one of the first illustrators on The Graphic. A fine etcher, Macbeth was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers when the Society was founded. Many of his landscapes were painted in Lincolnshire and in the West Country, although he spent much of his life in London.
