Description

A wonderful example of late 19th century folk genre painting by the German artist Reinhold Schmidt (1861-1927). The scene depicts a young courting couple in a rural setting: a boy in waistcoat and working trousers smoking a clay pipe, whilst the girl, dressed in elaborate traditional folk costume (Tracht), looks down demurely, holding a small daisy. The dynamic between the two figures captures a sweet, narrative moment typical of the genre. The background features a rolling pastoral landscape with winding path, village dwellings, birch trees and stream. Well presented in a painted wooden frame with orange blossom running pattern. Signed lower right. On thick card.

Condition

Areas of surface abrasion and bitumen deterioration. Abrasion marks to the perimeter. The overall condition of the artwork is very good considering age. The frame is in fine condition.
