Cooper is captured seated, holding a document in his left hand, dressed in a black suit and white shirt with turned-down collar and cravat. His strong sideburn and chin-beard combination was fashionable for the decade. The artist captures the subject with precision, his direct gaze conveying strength and confidence. The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Light surface discolouration throughout including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. A previous tear to the canvas has been fully restored. Minor surface marks/ abrasions are present. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition for its age.
