A beautifully executed academic portrait by Rach Ludwig (1853–1933) of the Munich School. Captured in profile, Ludwig demonstrates sensitive handling of light on the skin tones, as well as the soft sheen of the woman's plaited dark hair, adorned with a crimson bow. The blue dress with lace décolletage is also rendered with the same confident, fluid brushwork. The portrait is signed with the artist's monogram in the upper right and dated 1880. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. There is a faint white residue running vertically near centre of the composition. Minor abrasions to the edges of the canvas. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition.
