This intimate mid 19th century portrait attributed to the artist Gerrit Buitendijk Kuijk (1805-1884) depicts a young sculptor carefully working on a small clay bust with concentrated attention. The composition employs dramatic chiaroscuro lighting that illuminates the subject's face and hands against a dark background. Unsigned. Historic label verso. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Light discolouration to the varnish. Some undulation to the canvas. The artwork has undergone previous restoration: the canvas has been relined.
