Description

A humorous scene after a scene from William Hogarth's (1697-1764) series of eight paintings A Rake's Progress. The series depicts the decline of Tom Rakewell, a wealthy young man with immoral and promiscuous habits. The scene depicted here is the fourth part of the story, where Tom narrowly avoids being arrested for debt. Well presented in a vintage gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Craquelure and slight discolouration. Small loss to the paint in the upper left corner. Abrasions along the right-hand side where the frame has rubbed against the surface. Areas of overpainting. Wear to the frame leaves it with a distressed finish.
