Description
This charming scene depicts a child at the feet of his seated mother reading out loud from a book. The sister looks up at them both, smiling as she holds out her apron full of flowers. The woman wears an interesting head piece that has a height more often worn by widows or matrons. The artist captures delightful details in the figure's clothing, showing the fine floral patterns of the woman's dress and the lace of the boy's collar. Painted in a naïve style with exaggerated features and a stylised technique. Unsigned. Presented in a gilt frame. On board.Condition
There is some light scratching to the surface of the paint. The frame has a considerable amount of markings and small chips to the right hand side.
