Description

A lively nineteenth-century genre scene by Belgian artist Théodore Gérard (1829–1895) depicting a young man in animated conversation with a barmaid. Reclining casually in his chair with one leg crossed, the gentleman gestures expressively whilst holding a folded letter. The young woman listens attentively. The work is signed to the lower right and is well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure throughout. There is a small canvas tear repair, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. There are scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame.
