A remarkable portrait of a young lady seated in a luxurious red chair, elegantly attired in a black gown. Her carefully styled ringlet curls and the fashionable 'bertha' neckline of her dress place this work within the first half of the nineteenth century, and suggest that she was British or central European. She holds a sprig of lily of the valley, which - in Germany in particular - is traditionally associated with purity. It is also associated with virginity and is used as a bridal flower. Its inclusion here perhaps represents the young woman’s eligibility for marriage, or commemorates a recent union. This interpretation is further enhanced by the miniature portrait adorning her bracelet, possibly depicting her betrothed or husband. Additional period details, such as her finely painted jewellery, lace, and guard chain, demonstrate the artist’s skill. The painting is beautifully presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Evidence of restorative work, including relining, tear repairs, and areas of overpainting. Some discolouration and craquelure. The taped edges of the canvas are visible within the frame. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
