Eugen Altenberg (1886-1965) was a German painter who trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 1909, the city of Aachen commissioned him to paint a portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II. During the First World War, Altenberg served as an officer and was seriously wounded; he was discharged in 1917 with the rank of lieutenant and awarded the Iron Cross First Class. In 1918, he returned to his hometown of Wald, where he received numerous portrait commissions, including depictions of mayors, honorary citizens, and other prominent figures, including a commission for a posthumous portrait of the philosopher Friedrich Albert Lange. In 1929, Altenberg spent a year in Dalmatia, producing a series of paintings inspired by the Mediterranean landscape. He also created landscape works in regions such as the Sauerland, Waldeck, and the Black Forest. In 1930, he became a lecturer at the municipal painting school in Solingen, and in 1932, the Düsseldorf Art Academy awarded him the title of professor.
