Description

A finely detailed portrait of Reverend Lewis Way (1772-1840), who married Mary Drewe in 1801. Originally trained as a barrister, Way became the close friend of the wealthy John Way (1732–1804). Although the two men were not related, they formed a friendship through their shared surname, and upon John Way's death, Lewis inherited a substantial fortune. Following his inheritance, Way devoted himself to philanthropy and was ordained as a priest. He is depicted here wearing a fur coat and holding a red wallet in which he carried family pictures during his journey to Russia in 1817 to visit Jewish populations and religious sites. During this visit, he obtained four audiences with Tsar Alexander I. The portrait is executed with fine attention to detail. It is presented in an attractive gilt frame with a crimson velvet inlay. Unsigned. On board.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some slight discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Scuffs and scratches to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
