Sebastian Buff (1829-1880) - 1864 Oil Man Reading
Description
This fine 19th century oil depicts a man reading with his hands clasped together as if in prayer. The blue robes suggest a connection to the church choir. The man is captured in excellent detail, particularly in his delicate facial features. Signed and dated to the right hand side of the painting. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with fluted edges, beaded straps, lambs tongue detail and acanthus leaves. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
There is craquelure distributed evenly across the surface of the painting. There has been a canvas repair to the reverse, which is slightly visible to the left of the painting.

Sebastian Buff (1829-1880) was born in Wald, Switzerland. the studies under the portrait painter L. Tanner before attending Munich School of Art. the spent some time in Wildegg in St Gall Canton and Munich before settling down permanently in Switzerland. biography mentioned in Benezit Dictionary of Artists.
