Fine French School Late 19th Century Oil - Portrait of a Lady in Blue
Description
This elegant late 19th-century French School portrait presents a sophisticated lady of high standing. The woman stands in a three-quarter pose, turned slightly with her head gently inclined toward the viewer. She wears a fitted blue-grey dress typical of French fashion in the 1870s and early 1880s, with its tailored bodice featuring a high lace collar and a large blue bow at the neck. One arm rests at her side holding a glove whilst a lace shawl drapes gracefully over her arm. The dress’s narrow front and fuller back – characteristic of the first bustle period – convey the elegance of 19th-century fashion. Her hairstyle – a coiffure à l’impératrice popularised by Empress Eugénie – recalls the refined figures painted by Eva Gonzalès and Berthe Morisot, whilst the swift handling of her clothing and gloved hand suggest the influence of Manet’s painterly style. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a swept gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration to the varnish and light abrasions across the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals very small areas of restoration. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Wear to the frame including scuffs, chips, stable cracking and indentations throughout. The frame has undergone previous restoration.
