After serving for for two years in the British Army, Peter Roland-Mclean went on to follow his passion for painting at the Camberwell College of Art. At the college he was tutored by a not yet internationally recognised Lucien Freud. He became good friends with his tutor, and found himself invited into the exclusive circles of the The French House on Dean Street and the The Colony Room in Soho, a regular haunt of renowned British artists such as Francis Bacon and John Deakin.
Roland-Mclean's dependence on alcohol is a central theme in his work, reflecting on the fun, hard and often lonely times that his struggles brought to him. His work makes for a realist portrait of 1960's London art scene and the city's drinking culture. In later life Roland-Mclean is sober, yet still chooses to capture his past experiences through his oil paintings.
