Description

A portrait of a young woman with a serious expression. The combination of the sitter's hairstyle of long ringlet curls hanging on either side of the face, popular among young women on formal occasions, and conservative, high-necked dress suggests that the painting dates to the 1840s. She is in half-mourning, having introduced a white lace collar and a brooch that likely belonged to the deceased to her black ensemble. Presented in an ornate gilt-effect wooden frame with foliate strap work and a silver gilt slip. Unsigned. There is a faint inscription on the reverse of the painting saying "Percorelli." On board.

Condition

The painting has some discoloration. There are two large tears to the edges of the board at left and right that have been stabilised and over painted. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration and minor areas of over painting. The frame is in remarkable condition with only minor areas of restoration to the corners.
