Marie de' Medici (1575-1642) was Queen of France as the second wife of King Henry IV and served as regent for her son Louis XIII following her husband's death in 1610. Even after Louis came of age to rule in 1614, she retained power until she was exiled in 1617. She escaped and raised a revolt, aided by Cardinal de Richelieu, and was eventually readmitted to the king's council in 1622. However, Richelieu enraged her by rejecting the Franco-Spanish alliance and allying France with Protestant powers. In the crisis known as the Day of the Dupes, she demanded that Louis dismiss Richelieu. Louis, however, stood by Richelieu and banished Marie. She fled to Brussels and never returned to France. She is depicted here in miniature, dressed in splendid regal attire with a jewelled crown upon her head. Beautifully presented in an antique gilt frame. Indistinctly inscribed verso. Unsigned.
