Robert Julius Beyschlag was born in Nördlingen on 1 July 1838. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. From 1856 he trained under the painter Philipp Foltz, after which he travelled to Paris and Italy. Working from Munich, Beyschlag built an internationally recognised career centred on romantic and emotional genre scenes, in keeping with the popular style in Germany during the 19th century. His subjects encompassed mythological themes, figures, and genre scenes. His depiction of Psyche, the Greek goddess of the soul, enjoyed particular international acclaim. He also produced 'Female Costume Pictures' which were praised for both their artistic quality and their historical specificity. These studies were published as collotypes in 1885 under the title 'Frauenlob'. He also painted a fresco in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich. He died in Munich on 15 December 1903, aged 65.
