Pierre Tossyn - 1876 Oil Portrait of a Lady
Description
An exceptional late nineteenth century portrait of a young woman by Pierre Tossyn. The sitter is elegantly dressed in a black dress with a delicate lace collar, while soft pink roses adorn her hair and bodice. A red jewel hangs on a velvety black ribbon around her neck. Tossyn's accomplished brushwork is particularly evident in the intricate rendering of the fine lace and the luminous texture of the sitter's blonde hair. The work is signed and dated to the lower right, and is well presented in an oval gilt frame adorned with ornate foliate motifs. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including slight discolouration and craquelure. Small losses to the paint layer around the edges, and slight undulation to the bottom of the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous overpainting. The restoration is to a high standard. The artwork is in very good condition for its age and presents well.
