Manner of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) - Oil The Lute Player

Description

A charming late 19th century genre scene reminiscent of the 17th century Dutch tavern painting tradition, depicting a gentleman gleefully playing the lute, whilst an elderly lady prepares food behind him. Signed indistinctly to the lower right. Handsomely presented in a gilt frame with acanthus pattern to the inner, as well as ribbon and stick pattern to the outer. On panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration to the varnish and craquelure throughout the surface. There is a slight split to the panel; however, this has been previously restored. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including scuffing, indentations and numerous losses to the mouldings and to the corners of the frame. There is slight separation to the mitre joints.
