A finely detailed engraving by Luke Sullivan (1705-1771) after David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). The scene depicts the Temptation of Saint Anthony, an often-repeated subject in art and literature. In the story, the devil subjects Anthony – who has retired to the desert to live as a hermit – to numerous temptations, usually represented as beautiful women or demonic creatures. Signed within the plate. Well presented in a vintage black frame with gilt running patterns. On paper.
