An impressive engraving by John George Murray (active 1829-1855) after a history painting by Charles Landseer (1799-1879). The scene is based on Sir Walter Scott's historical novel 'The Abbot' and depicts Mary, Queen of Scots mourning over her admirer George Douglas, who was mortally wounded whilst protecting her. The work is inscribed below the image and is well presented in a maple wood frame with a gilt slip. On paper.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration and foxing to the paper. Water staining to the lower left. Scratches and scuffs to the frame. Wear and small losses to the corners.
