Antique engraving with hand colouring titled 'An Exact Draught of the Bay and Harbour of Vigo,' engraved by James Basire (1730-1802). The Battle of Vigo Bay was a naval engagement during the War of the Spanish Succession that saw a combined Anglo-Dutch navy capture a fleet of Spanish ships laden with treasure from America. The print is from 'Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History'. Nicolas Tindal translated Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' into English, and would later add volumes covering the reign of James I to George I. The work is well presented in a black frame with gilt running patterns. On paper.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, such as discolouration and foxing to the paper. Tears to the righthand side, and some abrasions along the upper margin. Scuffs and losses to the frame. Overall the condition remains good for a picture of this age.
