An evocative mid-19th-century scene depicting a weary mother crossing a bridge with her children. The baby is nestled against her neck, while the older child walks beside her, holding her hand, shoeless and dragging a stick as they cross. Signed and dated. Beautifully presented in a swept gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Fine craquelure throughout. Some discolouration to the varnish. A faint stretcher-bar impression is present on the canvas. Small areas of overpainting evident under UV light. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including scuffs and some fine, but stable cracking.
