Description
An accomplished genre scene depicting the interior of a bookbinder's workshop with customers, journeymen at work and an older man about to beat a boy with a leather strap, by which the child's mother intervenes, restraining the man's arms, preventing the act of chastisement. The oil has been well presented in a modern gilt stucco frame. Unsigned. On canvas.Condition
The painting has undergone previous restoration to include a full canvas relining. Inspection under UV light reveals various areas of retouching. There is widespread craquelure to the surface of the painting. The modern stucco frame is in very good condition. The overall condition of the artwork is very good for its age.
