Artist Biography

Nils Ivan Thord Lindhe (1875-1954) was a Swedish-American portrait painter. He studied at the Konstakademien (Academy of Art) in Stockholm, before joining the army to serve as commissioned first lieutenant Swedish officer of the Royal First Life Grenadier Regiment from 1898-1902. He travelled to London around 1904, where he studied under many of the foremost painters there. He became a member of the Modern Society of Portrait Painters, and numerous well known and distinguished men and women had their portraits painted by Lindhe, including the former French ambassador Paul Cambon, Lord Dunmore, Mrs Patrick Ramsay, sister-in-law of Princess Patricia, Lady Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, and Dame Eileen Younghusband, daughter of the famous explorer and spiritual writer Sir Francis Younghusband. Lindhe later spent some time in Norway, and then in Paris for three years before immigrating to the United States in 1924, where he settled in Buffalo and later in Los Angeles. He then returned to Sweden in 1931. He exhibited internationally throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and his works can be found in numerous public and private collections as well as museums and galleries worldwide.
