Fine Mid 19th Century Oil - Portrait of Mayor John Neve
Description
A fine mid-19th century portrait depicting Mayor John Neve (1796-1856) of Wolverhampton, whose tenure spanned 1853 to 1854. The artist has portrayed the figure in a sweeping Romantic style, employing gestural yet delicate brushstrokes. Mayor Neve is depicted in his finest attire, his hair carefully swept to the side – undoubtedly echoing the influence of Prince Albert. A rich red curtain forms the backdrop, adding opulence to the composition and enhancing the portrait’s romantic sensibility. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with detailed running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a portrait of this age, including craquelure and light abrasions to the surface. There is a very small indentation to the lower right. Inspection under UV light reveals very small areas of overpainting. The canvas has been relined. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including scuffing, chips, abrasions and fine stable cracking throughout. The frame has undergone previous restoration work, including repairs to the corner ornaments.
