Description

A fine mid 19th century portrait depicting an elegant young lady. Her glossy black hair is smoothly parted and swept over her ears, drawing attention to a sparkling amethyst grape-drop earring. She wears an intricate lace collar, complemented by a striking coral bow. The vibrant colour reflects the changing tastes of the period, when the introduction of aniline dyes in the late 1850s and 1860s made saturated hues increasingly desirable. The painting displays confident, sensitive brushwork and a skilful treatment of light that lends the sitter warmth and vitality. The soft background imparts a gentle romantic character, enhancing the portrait's quiet sophistication. The painting has previously been attributed to Franz Schrotzberg (1811–1889). However, as the work is unsigned, we are unable to substantiate this attribution. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure throughout. The artwork has been previously restored, including small areas of overpainting and relining. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs and stable cracking. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
