19th Century Oil - Portrait of a Young Gentleman

Description

An accomplished nineteenth-century portrait of a young gentleman, formally attired in a black coat. The artist demonstrates exceptionally fine brushwork and dramatic chiaroscuro to illuminate the sitter's expressive features, creating a striking sense of depth and presence. The work is handsomely presented in a highly ornate gilt frame, adorned with swirling foliate motifs and lamb's tongue running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration, craquelure, and bitumen deterioration throughout. The canvas has been previously relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Losses and cracking to the frame. Parts of the frame ornamentation have been remoulded. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good for a picture of this age and the piece presents well.
