Description
This fine mid-19th-century portrait, circa 1840, depicts a solemn-faced lady with dark hair parted at the centre. She wears a sombre mourning dress with a white lace collar and a small brooch. In her hand she holds a quill feather, likely intended as a memento mori. The austere styling and restrained, muted palette are characteristic of early Victorian portraiture. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Craquelure and abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting. The canvas has been relined. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age.
