Artist Biography
Although little is known about her life or artistic training, Betty Battiscombe's (1916-2002) vibrant compositions speak for themselves. With expressive brushwork, careful consideration of light and shadow, and vivid colour, her work reflects the influence of the Post-Impressionists, and the broader currents of modern British painting during the mid twentieth century more generally. Battiscombe's work comprises predominantly female nude studies. Her depictions are at times unashamedly frank, yet her use of warm colour imbues each composition with a sense of intimacy, sensitivity, and tenderness that celebrates the female form. Provenance: acquired from the studio of the artist.
