A remarkable copy after Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Following the death of his first wife, Rubens married Hélène Fourment (1614-1673), the sixteen-year-old daughter of a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant. She sat for several portraits by Rubens and also modelled for his religious and mythological paintings. In this portrait, the original of which is held by the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Rubens depicts his wife as an ideal loving mother. Their naked son in her lap echoes depictions of the infant Christ, thus likening Helena to the Virgin Mary. The work is beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with rich fruit and leaf designs. The artwork has undergone restorative work, including three canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure. Scuffs and losses to the frame.
