Artist Biography

Margaret Milne was a painter who was born in Wimbledon, London, into a family of painters. Her great-grandfather was the Victorian landscape artist George Chester (1813-1897). Milne studied at Regent Street Polytechnic from 1926-30, and after World War II she worked as a freelance book illustrator on commissions from the publisher Raphael Tuck. By the mid-1950s she had turned to portrait painting and showed at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Paris Salon. Milne had her own gallery in Ditchling, Sussex, where she exhibited her own work and also showed locally at Hove Museum & Art Gallery.
