Framed Late 19th Century Oil - Continental Market Scene

Description

A very fine example of a late 19th Century impressionistic continental street scene, depicting a lively and crowded market square. The artist has intentionally built an array of colourful elements into the composition, the bustling market contrasting with the serene and simple church spire, adding perspective to a charming architectural view. Well-presented in a highly decorative gilt wood and composition moulding frame, with acanthus strapwork, floral motif and plain gilt slip. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

In good condition overall for a picture of this age. There are several areas of restoration, and the canvas has been relined to the reverse. Otherwise, some light surface discolouration. The frame is in very good condition overall, with only light wear to corners.
