Description

In this nineteenth-century oil painting, Saint Peter is shown clasping his hands in prayer, his gaze lifted toward heaven. A rooster appears in the background, symbolising Peter’s denial of Christ, foretold by Jesus at the last supper. After denying his association with Jesus three times, Peter heard the rooster crow and was overcome with repentance, as depicted in this composition. The keys placed beside him allude to his role as the keeper of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Well presented in a vintage gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration and craquelure. Impressions from the stretchers. Areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
