Framed 18th Century Oil - St. Veronica Before Christ
Description
A richly rendered devotional scene depicting the Sixth Station of the Cross, where Saint Veronica wipes Christ's face as he carries the cross to Calvary. According to tradition, an image of Christ's face (the Vera Icon) was miraculously imprinted upon the cloth. The hill with crosses visible in the background confirms the destination of Golgotha, whilst the Virgin Mary, clothed in blue robes, weeps nearby. The composition is elegantly presented in a gilt frame adorned with shell and foliate motifs. Unsigned. Provenance: No. 64 from the painting collection of J. H. Görrig, with wax seal verso. On canvas.Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Minor surface marks/abrasions are noted. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration/overpainting. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, and moulding losses. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition for its age.
