Description

According to Gregory the Great’s Dialogues, Saint Benedict foresaw his own death. Six days before his death, he gave orders for his tomb to be opened. He was then seized with a violent fever that grew worse until finally, on the sixth day, he had his disciples carry him into the chapel where he received the Body and Blood of Christ. Then, supporting his weakened body on the arms of his brethren, he died whilst in prayer. That day two monks saw a vision of a magnificent road covered with thousands of glittering lights stretching up into heaven.  Well presented in a wooden frame with gilt trim. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
