Description

An academic religious painting from the late 19th century depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus is shown on the cross wearing a crown of thorns, with a white loincloth. A scroll at the top of the cross reads 'JESUS REX' (Jesus, King), a variation of the traditional INRI inscription. The devotional study is housed in a distressed gilt-effect frame. Signed 'Bentele' to the lower right and dated 1872. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is very good for a picture of this age. Minor craquelure to the surface (upper left quadrant). Inspection under UV light reveals light retouching in this area. Light impressions in the canvas from the reverse canvas bars. General age-related wear to the gilt effect frame.
