This meticulously detailed heraldic study in pen and watercolour depicts the coat of arms of the Compton family, headed by the Marquess of Northampton. The central sable shield bears a lion passant surrounded by three knights' helmets. The shield is flanked by chained rampant dragons with an ermine pattern. Above, the crest takes the form of a red dragon and knight's helmet with swirling foliate motifs. Beneath the shield is a scroll bearing the motto, “Je ne cherche que ung” (“I seek but one”). Unsigned. On paper.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
