In 1889, warships from Germany, the United States, and Great Britain gathered in a bay off the coast of Apia, Samoa, preparing for battle. However, a great storm struck the island, sinking all but one vessel. Captain Henry Coey Kane successfully navigated HMS Calliope through the tempest to the relative safety of the open sea. Here, Kane is depicted leaping over the personified storm, which claws at the other ships in the water. Monogrammed to the lower right. Well presented in a vintage silver gilt frame. On paper.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and light foxing. Marks and scuffs to the frame leave it with a distressed finish.
