Early 19th Century Oil - Christ on the Cross
Description
An evocative 19th century religious painting depicting Christ on the cross, his pale skin luminous against the darkness of the night. An ethereal glow radiates from his head, symbolising his divinity. Above him, a small sign bearing the inscription INRI – "Jesus, King of the Jews" – is affixed to the top of the cross. His wounds remain fresh, with blood gently trickling from them, adding to the visceral weight of the scene. The artist demonstrates exceptional mastery in both brushwork and tonal composition, capturing the spiritual depth of the moment. Unsigned. Well presented in a gilt effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a painting of this age including discolouration to the varnish, abrasions and fine craquelure throughout. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals very small areas of overpainting. Small scratches throughout. There is a faint impression to the canvas caused by the stretchers. Some wear to the frame, including scratches and indentations. Fine craquelure to the paint layer.
