Description

This romantic scene depicts a young couple resting beneath a tree. The boy looks longingly at the girl who stares into the distance in a dream-like trance. The maiden rests her basket of foliage on her skirt as she gently plucks a plant from the ground.

This painting is of the style of Thomas Faed and his artistic circle in the mid 19th century. Genre paintings with strong narratives were gaining aesthetic popularity in Scotland during this time and artists with showed a particular interest in presenting the everyday life of country people.

Unsigned. The panel supplier's stamp to the reverse has helped us to date this painting as mid 19th century. This particular stamp was used by Brown's in the 1850's, which was stamped onto all of their art supplies at the time. Presented in an ornate gilt composition frame with foliate details.

On board.
