George Shalders (1826-1873) was a British landscape painter associated with the tradition of pastoral and rural scenery in Victorian art. He developed a career focused on depictions of tranquil countryside views, often featuring cattle and sheep set within softly rendered landscapes. Shalders exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other major London institutions during the mid-19th century, gaining recognition for his atmospheric treatment of light and natural detail. His work reflects the influence of earlier English landscape painters, particularly those connected with the pastoral school. He remained active throughout the 1850s and 1860s, producing works that were well received by contemporary audiences for their calm, idealised portrayal of rural life. Shalders died in 1873, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be associated with Victorian pastoral landscape painting.
