A finely rendered oil by the nautical artist Brian Coole. The scene shows various vessels entering and leaving Portsmouth harbor including a merchant navy vessel (identifiable by its red ensign flag), an American paddle steamer and a warship with canon ports. The artist has rendered each ship with a skilled hand and fine detail.
The artist has signed to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a gilt effect frame with decorative and beaded strap work.
On canvas.There is some mild discolouration to the varnish. There is stable craquelure across the surface and two very small losses, one at the centre of the left edge and the other at the upper-right edge. There are some slight marks and some slight textural patchiness to the paint layer, only visible when viewed at an oblique angle. There are some minor scuffs to the frame but overall it is in very good condition.

Entirely self-taught. Visits to public museums and galleries give his claimed influences of William Wyllie through a spectrum ranging to Rembrandt and Canaletto, although in the US, his work is compared to that of Fitz Hugh Lane.
