A fine copy after French painter Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860), whose orientalist subjects were popular and widely copied in the nineteenth century. Here a solitary guard stands holding a spear, a sword slung over his shoulder. Signed and dated to the lower right. Well presented in an antique gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including two canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration to the paint. Scuffs and losses to the frame.
