This engraving is taken from William Hogarth's Marriage-a-la-Mode series in which he follows the marriage story of Viscount Squanderfield and the daughter of a wealthy merchant, Hogarth takes the opportunity to tell a cautionary tale of why marriage should be for love and not financial gain. In this second plate, the young couple are shown as bored and indifferent, ignoring the the steward as he storms out o the room with unpaid bills in his hand. Title, date and engraver inscribed to the lower edge of the print. On paper laid to thin card.
