A finely detailed engraving after 'Le Fils Puni' (The Punished Son) by the French genre, history, and portrait painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). The scene reimagines the biblical parable of the prodigal son. Having gone off to war despite the pleadings of his family, the son returns, too late to be forgiven by his father before he dies.
