Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and fine craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is very good for a picture of this age.

Karel Breydel (1678-1733), known as 'Le Chevalier', was a Flemish painter of battle scenes, equestrian paintings, and landscapes. Few details of Breydel's life are known. Much of what is known is based on 'La Vie des Peintres Flamands, Allemands et Hollandois' by eighteenth-century French biographer Jean-Baptiste Descamps. However, this is an unreliable source as Descamps is known to exaggerate and invent stories in his biographies. Breydel was a pupil of Pieter Rijsbraeck and then of Peter Ykens in Antwerp. He travelled extensively in Italy and Germany, but returned to Antwerp upon hearing of his brother Frans' success. The two brothers worked together for two years with considerable success. Karel then travelled to Amsterdam, but was back in Antwerp in 1703 where he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1704. He is best known for his battle scenes, which are ingeniously composed and painted with meticulous detail in the manner of Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632-1690), Antwerp’s leading seventeenth-century battle painter. Breydel's work is in the collections of several prominent museums in Europe, including the Royal Museums of Brussels and the National Museum in Antwerp.
