Attrib. F. Giuntotardi (1768-1831) after G. Pussino - Engraving Mountain Path

Description

An engraving with hand colouring by the Italian painter and engraver Filippo Giuntotardi (1768-1831) after a painting by the Italian-French painter Gaspard Pussino, also known as Gaspard Dughet and Gaspard Poussin (1615-1675). The latter was the pupil and brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin and he later took Poussin's surname. A man in a tunic carries a net along a rural path in the foreground with rocky mountains and trees in the distance. Presented glazed in a white frame with gilt-effect detailing. Unsigned. On wove.

Condition

There is some very slight foxing and discolouration. There are a couple of creases to the substrate at the upper-right corner. There are some slight chips and marks to the frame. Overall in very good condition.

Collection Information

The engraving came into the possession of Sulis Fine Art as one of a pair by Giuntotardi after Pussino. The other includes the names of both artists inscribed in plate.

Artist Biography

Filippo Giuntotardi (1768-1831) was born in Rome. He was initially a sculptor and then studied at the Academie Saint-Luc where he devoted himself to landscape painting and from 1810 he also produced engravings and aquatints. Among some of his known works are 'Vue du Forum', 1805, painted for Prince George's of Mecklembourg; 'Vue de Tivoli', and illustrations for a work by Dodwell entitled 'Antiquites Grecques et Pelasgiques'. Other known works by Giuntotardi are at the Palais Colonna in Rome, which has twelve aquatints after Poussin's landscapes. The Museum of Karlruhe has two watercolours: 'Cascades de Tivoli' and 'Le Forum Romain'. There are engravings by Giuntotardi in the collections of the British Museum and Wellcome Collection.
